The New World, 2007
Color photographs
In this series of photographs, I continue to explore ideas of utopia, specifically as they relate to ideas about gender and nature. I have constructed an imaginary, all-female world by building a diorama containing trees, hills, and rivers, and populated by plasticine women and animals. Like many utopias, my imaginary female society is situated close to nature, in a forest; the cultural meanings of the woods, as explored in "Lord of the Flies", interest me as a site outside of the bounds of societal laws, where a dark and chaotic "human nature" is revealed. |
